The Hiram Strong Collection, of local, state and national interest, especially to U. S. Civil War historians, covers the period 1862-1863. The major part of these records describes the U.S. Civil War through the eyes of a young Union officer while on active duty from August 1862 until shortly before his death in October 1863. The collection includes the correspondence of Colonel Hiram Strong, a prominent lawyer of Dayton, Ohio, describing his military activities during his service in the War from August 1862 until his death in October 1863, his business transaction, political affairs, law associates and other individuals along, with his immediate family, friends and other relatives.

Hiram Strong was born on October 28, 1825 in Centerville, Ohio, the only child of Dr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Strong. He died on October 7, 1863, in his thirty-eighth year, as a result of wounds received on September 19 during the battle of Chickamauga. Details of Hiram Strong's early life are sketchy.
